Michael Butkus has been a member of the Kiwanis Club of Georgia since 2012. He is a member of the USO committee, the Younger Years committee and the Boys & Girls Club Work committee. He has been married to Barbara for 41+ years, is the father of three grown sons who all played lacrosse and has seven wonderful, beautiful grandchildren who all live in the Atlanta area.
He retired from a 35 year career on “Wall Street” as an Institutional Research Salesperson and has been promoted to full-time grandparent and part-time lacrosse coach. 2022 is his 27th year coaching youth and high school lacrosse.
He began his lacrosse journey when, realizing his quest for the NBA was not likely to work out, he tried out for his high school lacrosse team in his sophomore year. He played college lacrosse at Princeton University and continued post collegiately to play for the NJ Lacrosse Club and the Atlanta Lacrosse Club. He is a past president of the Atlanta Lacrosse Club as well as the Georgia Lacrosse Foundation and the Atlanta Youth Lacrosse program. He continues to serve on the Board of Directors of the Georgia Lacrosse Foundation. He founded and is President of Open Door Lacrosse of Georgia whose mission is to promote diversity and inclusion in the growth of lacrosse in Georgia. Along with former Kiwanian JD Humphries, he traveled to Thomaston, Ga. In the mid-90s to discuss the introduction of lacrosse as a GHSA sanctioned sport. He also visited many high schools in the Atlanta area as they were considering the introduction of a lacrosse program. He founded the lacrosse program at Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School, coached the varsity program for four years before starting the middle school boy’s program and continues to coach there today. He was selected as Georgia Lacrosse Man of the Year in 2007 and was elected to the Georgia Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 2009.
