Atlanta Community Food Bank
Atlanta Community Food Bank
Kyle Waide leads the Atlanta Community Food Bank in fulfilling its mission to engage, educate and empower the community to fight hunger. As one of the largest hunger relief organizations in the Southeast, the Food Bank connects over 750,000 people each year with more than 69 million pounds of food – or nearly 58 million meals – through a network of 600 partner nonprofits across 29 counties in greater Atlanta and north Georgia.
Prior to being named President and CEO in June of 2015, Waide served for three years as the Food Bank’s Vice President of Partner Operations, leading the organization to record-breaking years of food distribution to those in need in the community.

Through Waide’s collaborative efforts to improve distribution best practices, the Food Bank nearly doubled its distribution of food in three years, providing an additional 24 million meals a year to those in need. The Food Bank also built systems to increase the nutritional quality of its product offerings and has dramatically grown the volume of fresh produce delivered to the hungry.

Prior to joining the Food Bank, Waide held management roles at The Home Depot Inc. across diverse areas, including disaster relief, corporate responsibility, community affairs and store operations. Waide previously served as part of the management team that created and launched Charity Navigator, the nation's premier charity evaluation service and was a Teach For America corps member, teaching eighth grade math and language arts in Compton, CA.

Waide follows Founder and Executive Director Bill Bolling, who announced in 2014 that he would step down from his position, following 36 years of leadership.  He is a graduate of Harvard University and, in 2016, completed Harvard Business School’s Strategic Perspectives in Nonprofit Management. He is a member of Rotary Club of Atlanta and the Leadership Atlanta Class of 2015. He serves as Secretary/Treasurer for the Georgia Food Bank Association. He also serves on the Advisory Board of KIPP Atlanta Collegiate, a public charter high school serving students in the West End community and is a founding member of Young Professionals for Educational Equity, an independent advocacy group promoting solutions for students in low-income communities.

He resides in Decatur with his wife, Christina, and their three children.

Past Presidents Day at Kiwanis Club of Atlanta is August 8th!
All Past Presidents of the Kiwanis Club of Atlanta will be recognized and celebrated at our annual Past Presidents Luncheon on Tuesday, August 8, 2017.

Please let the office know by Monday, August 7th if you can attend so we can be sure to recognize you.  Please email KiwanisClubAtlanta@gmail.com.
GaRRS is needing volunteers to read!
The Georgia Radio Reading Service is Georgia's only statewide radio service for the blind, visually-impaired, and print-impaired.  GaRRS reads newspapers, books and magazines for thousands of Georgians of all ages who are unable to read for themselves—including infants and children.

Please consider joining GaRRS as a volunteer reader to record books, magazines, and newspapers. The hours are flexible and you can record at your convenience with monthly, weekly, and daily reading opportunities. Our recording booths are open 24 hours a day and are conveniently located in the GPB building at 260 14th street in Atlanta.

If you are interested becoming a volunteer reader, please contact Jim Beattie, jimbeattie@comcast.net. Thank you!”
KCA Social to view the Total Solar Eclipse!
Kiwanians, our next social will be at the Sky Valley home of Jeb and Marsha Howell to view the Total Solar Eclipse!  Please see below for a special invitation to attend this once in a lifetime event!

On MONDAY, August 21, 2017, a Total Solar Eclipse will pass directly over our mountain home in Sky Valley, GA, the nearest spot to Atlanta.
This is a once in a lifetime event! Or more appropriately, a once in two lifetimes event! The last total solar eclipse visible in the United States was on June 8, 1918 (which happens to be 12 days after our club's official charter date!)

The path of the eclipse is only 65 miles wide. We will be in a total eclipse for about 3 minutes at 2:35 PM, with about an hour before and after of partial eclipse. Marsha and I  have a large yard at our Sky Valley home, right on a lake at 3500 feet elevation, and we want as many of our friends as possible to come up and see it with us.

We will have someone cooking hot dogs, hamburgers etc- BYOB- for those of you in Atlanta, you can come up Monday AM and be back before dark Monday PM. If you want to come from farther away, we can help you find lodging, stay the weekend. We will probably have a guide bring those who want to take the one hour hike to the top of Rabun Bald, Georgia's 2nd highest peak (about 4800 feet), which is visible from our Sky Valley home.

I have attached images showing the path of the eclipse from a broader geographic perspective, plus a closer look at the path through Sky Valley, and a map from 1918 showing the path of the last total solar eclipse (it missed Georgia).

We will order  a quantity of the special sunglasses for safely viewing the eclipse, so please RSVP to jeb.howell@gmail.com by August 14, 2017  if you think you will come so we have enough glasses!

HOPE TO SEE YOU THERE!

Kiwanis Club of Atlanta Car Decals
Don't get the BOOT!  Be sure your car has a Kiwanis Club of Atlanta car decal properly displayed on your vehicle.
The security company contracted by Lanier Parking will be booting all cars that are parked in the reserved parking places and that do not have a valid decal on their car identifying them as attending the Kiwanis Club of Atlanta luncheon.  So if you arrive prior to 11:45 am on Tuesday, please make sure you have a parking decal on your car.  You can get a decal from Karen at the luncheon meeting, and then place it on the right back window (passenger side) from inside your car.  They are static cling, so easy to put on and take off!
