John F. King was sworn in as Georgia’s Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner by Governor Brian Kemp on July 1, 2019, becoming the first Hispanic statewide official in state history.

Before his appointment, Commissioner King served in various law enforcement positions, beginning as an Atlanta Police officer in 1985. He culminated as Doraville’s Chief of Police from 2002 to 2019 after working his way up from Detective. While at the Atlanta Police Department, King received the Chief’s Blue Star for being injured in the line of duty as a result of a criminal attack with a firearm.

In addition to his former roles in the Atlanta and Doraville Police Departments, King served as a Major General in the U.S. Army National Guard assigned to NORAD and U.S. Northern Command. In his 41-year National Guard career, King deployed to Bosnia-Herzegovina, Iraq, Afghanistan, and Africa. King celebrated his retirement from service in February of 2023.

King received his Bachelor’s of Arts degree in criminal justice and public administration from Brenau University and a Master’s Degree in Strategic Studies from the U.S. Army War College. He was a graduate of class #229 in the FBI National Academy in Quantico, VA.

KI Youth Protection Guidelines Official Notice
Each year, KI requires all clubs to inform and educate our members on Youth Protection Guidelines, best practices and required actions for our members who work with youth under the age of 18. Attached is the latest official policy and procedure and we ask all members to review this.

Also, club members who work directly with youth under 18 years of age are required to undergo a background screening, offered through KI and accessed on the KI membership portal.  More information will be sent directly to those members who chair a youth committee, or who are listed as a volunteer with a youth committee, in the next few weeks.

Thank you for your attention to this important guideline which helps ensure that all the youth we help through our service programs are kept safe.

KCA Summer Relaxed Dress Code
It's summer and that means our club's relaxed dress code policy is in effect through September!  Sorry, this doesn't mean cut offs and flip flops, but for men, polo shirts (the club polo shirt is even better) with slacks is great and women can easily identify with Resort Casual wear.  We hope you will come to a meeting in person soon and enjoy a comfortable relaxed atmosphere at the Loudermilk Center!
KCA Parking only in Parking Deck
This is a reminder that you are not to park in the open lot across from the Loudermilk Center front doors.  Only park in the parking deck for the Tuesday meetings.

The open lot is now a public lot, and you will be subject to paying their parking fees and possible booting/towing.  The club parking card or stickers will not apply to this lot.

Also, please make sure you have a decal for your car to identify that you are with the club if you park in the reserved spaces in the deck.

Thank you for your cooperation and see you at Kiwanis!
Automatic In Person Attendance Registration Available!
Are you attending the KCA weekly meetings in person all the time and want to skip the registration process?  Just email Karen at KiwanisClubAtlanta@gmail.com and have your name added to the automatic attendance list.  Easy Peasy.  All we ask is that you let us know when you ARE NOT going to be there so we don't have extra food ordered.  Add your name to the list today and we will see you on Tuesday, Jan 4th!
