Carolyn Newton Curry, Ph.D., is the Founder and Director of Women Alone Together, a non-profit foundation that addresses the special needs of women. Supported through grants and contributions and partnering with Agnes Scott College Alumnae Association, the foundation works to build confidence and community among the growing number of women who are alone in our culture. Although the group works to encourage women who are alone because of death of spouse, divorce, single by choice or alone in a marriage because of separation or estrangement, all women are invited.
Compelled by women’s stories shared with her during years of research and teaching, Curry founded WAT in 2002. She has led the organization to become the dynamic, viable entity it is today. In addition to writing papers on significant women’s issues, she often speaks to various groups around the country on women’s issues and about WAT.
Curry has taught at the University of Kentucky and the Westminster Schools in Atlanta. She has served on numerous boards and is cuurently on the Board of Directors of the Agnes Scott Alumnae Association and The Atlanta Women’s Network for Care International, among others.
She has received numerous awards including the Georgia State University Distinguished Alumni Community Service Award, the Agnes Scott College Distinguished Alumna Award – Service to the Community and the Outstanding Alumni Award in College of Arts and Sciences at Georgia State University.
In March 2014, Mercer University Press in Macon, Georgia, published her book, Suffer and Grow Strong: The Life of Ella Gertrude Clanton Thomas 1834-1907. It received the 2014 Award for Excellence Using the Holdings of an Archive from the Georgia Historical Records Advisory Council, University System or Georgia. Curry also received Georgia Author of the Year in Biography in 2015 from The Georgia Writers Association. The Georgia Center for the Book selected her book as one of the 2015 Ten Books All Georgians Should Read. In 2018 she received Author of the Year from the Atlanta Branch of the National League of American Pen Women, Inc. In 2019 an expanded edition was published by Mercer University Press.
She received a B. A. degree in English from Agnes Scott, and both her M.A. and Ph.D. in history from Georgia State. She and her husband, Bill, the former head football coach at Georgia Tech, have been married 55 years and have a daughter, Kristin Hunter, a son Bill Curry, Jr., and seven grandchildren.

We have had great speakers during our Kiwanis Club of Atlanta Zoom meetings! If you couldn't participate, we have saved all of them to Dropbox, but the most recent ones are available through the live link of the speaker name! Click more to see the list of speakers and send an email to KiwanisClubAtlanta@gmail.com to let us know which meetings you would like to have.
The club is creating a contact list of Kiwanis members directly on our Zoom account to make it easier to share speaker files, distribute any data they have sent, etc. Only members that have a Zoom account can be on this contact list. If you access the Zoom meetings through a direct link, but have not downloaded the Zoom app, then I cannot add you at this time.
Are you having trouble receiving the KCA Bulletins and other email communications? It appears that computer systems/servers who use Symantec are having trouble getting communications from our ClubRunner system delivered to their inboxes. While we work on this issue with ClubRunner, I have an email list serve set up through Outlook to send the bulletins out each week to those who need it. And if you are having trouble receiving your quarterly bills, I can send them to you through QuickBooks. Just email me at KiwanisClubAtlanta@gmail.com and I will add you to the list!
