June Interclub with Northside at Villa International
Dear Atlanta Kiwanians,

Please join us for the Atlanta Kiwanis June Interclub with the Kiwanis Club of Northside Atlanta – at a different date and location.  We will meet June 29 at noon at Villa International, 1749 Clifton Road, Atlanta 30329, across from CDC.  This event will take the place of our usual 4th Thursday interclub for June.  Please RSVP to Karen Carlisle at kcarlis5@kennesaw.edu or at 404-668-8952 if you can join us June 29.
About Villa International
Villa International is a 33-room residence founded in 1967 and launched in 1970 with funding from the Presbyterian Women of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A). Since its doors opened in 1972, Villa International has hosted 25,000+ residents from 147 countries. Residents are primarily international researchers at the CDC and the Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University, but include others, such as public health professionals of all varieties, interning doctors, students and seminarians.

Atlanta can be an intimidating city, especially for international visitors working long hours in unfamiliar surroundings. Finding a place to live can often be a daunting experience. Being able to afford housing, when a month’s rent is often more than a guest’s entire annual salary, can be a deal breaker. In response to these obstacles, seven Christian denominations provide this welcoming community where visitors can find acceptance, respect, and the comforts of home.

Best regards,

Karen Carlisle

KCA Social to view the Total Solar Eclipse!
Kiwanians, our next social will be at the Sky Valley home of Jeb and Marsha Howell to view the Total Solar Eclipse!  Please see below for a special invitation to attend this once in a lifetime event!

On MONDAY, August 21, 2017, a Total Solar Eclipse will pass directly over our mountain home in Sky Valley, GA, the nearest spot to Atlanta.
This is a once in a lifetime event! Or more appropriately, a once in two lifetimes event! The last total solar eclipse visible in the United States was on June 8, 1918 (which happens to be 12 days after our club's official charter date!)

The path of the eclipse is only 65 miles wide. We will be in a total eclipse for about 3 minutes at 2:35 PM, with about an hour before and after of partial eclipse. Marsha and I  have a large yard at our Sky Valley home, right on a lake at 3500 feet elevation, and we want as many of our friends as possible to come up and see it with us.

We will have someone cooking hot dogs, hamburgers etc- BYOB- for those of you in Atlanta, you can come up Monday AM and be back before dark Monday PM. If you want to come from farther away, we can help you find lodging, stay the weekend. We will probably have a guide bring those who want to take the one hour hike to the top of Rabun Bald, Georgia's 2nd highest peak (about 4800 feet), which is visible from our Sky Valley home.

I have attached images showing the path of the eclipse from a broader geographic perspective, plus a closer look at the path through Sky Valley, and a map from 1918 showing the path of the last total solar eclipse (it missed Georgia).

We will order  a quantity of the special sunglasses for safely viewing the eclipse, so please RSVP to jeb.howell@gmail.com by August 14, 2017  if you think you will come so we have enough glasses!

HOPE TO SEE YOU THERE!

Kiwanis Club of Atlanta Car Decals
Don't get the BOOT!  Be sure your car has a Kiwanis Club of Atlanta car decal properly displayed on your vehicle.
The security company contracted by Lanier Parking will be booting all cars that are parked in the reserved parking places and that do not have a valid decal on their car identifying them as attending the Kiwanis Club of Atlanta luncheon.  So if you arrive prior to 11:45 am on Tuesday, please make sure you have a parking decal on your car.  You can get a decal from Karen at the luncheon meeting, and then place it on the right back window (passenger side) from inside your car.  They are static cling, so easy to put on and take off!
