A resident of Atlanta for 40 years, Sidney Kirschner transferred here to join National Service Industries, Inc (NSI) in an Executive capacity. At the time, NSI was a Fortune 500 Corporation with annual revenue of 500 million dollars and he eventually became Chairman and CEO, growing the company to a 3 billion dollar conglomerate resulting from his intricate involvement in more than thirty significant acquisitions, transactions and multimillion dollar expansion projects. He retired in 1992 to work in the non-profit world. He had served on Northside Hospital's board of directors from 1984 and became President and CEO of Northside Hospital following his retirement from NSI. He left General Dynamics as president of the Electric Motor Division to join NSI.
At Northside Hospital, Kirschner championed a dedication to service excellence, raised the level of commitment to community service and helped to expand the hospital's service area with a number of new service delivery sites. To celebrate the Kiwanis legacy and encourage membership in the club, Kiwanis Club of Atlanta members are encouraged to bring a family member, including an in-law, to our lunch meeting on Tuesday, August 1st. All legacy visitors who are interested in club membership will be guests of the membership committee that day! And who said there was no such thing as a "free lunch?!" Please email the office with the name of your guest by July 28th to KiwanisClubAtlanta@gmail.com.
All Past Presidents of the Kiwanis Club of Atlanta will be recognized and celebrated at our annual Past Presidents Luncheon on Tuesday, August 8, 2017.
Please let the office know by Monday, August 7th if you can attend so we can be sure to recognize you. Please email KiwanisClubAtlanta@gmail.com.
Kiwanians, our next social will be at the Sky Valley home of Jeb and Marsha Howell to view the Total Solar Eclipse! Please see below for a special invitation to attend this once in a lifetime event!
On MONDAY, August 21, 2017, a Total Solar Eclipse will pass directly over our mountain home in Sky Valley, GA, the nearest spot to Atlanta.
This is a once in a lifetime event! Or more appropriately, a once in two lifetimes event! The last total solar eclipse visible in the United States was on June 8, 1918 (which happens to be 12 days after our club's official charter date!)
The path of the eclipse is only 65 miles wide. We will be in a total eclipse for about 3 minutes at 2:35 PM, with about an hour before and after of partial eclipse. Marsha and I have a large yard at our Sky Valley home, right on a lake at 3500 feet elevation, and we want as many of our friends as possible to come up and see it with us.
We will have someone cooking hot dogs, hamburgers etc- BYOB- for those of you in Atlanta, you can come up Monday AM and be back before dark Monday PM. If you want to come from farther away, we can help you find lodging, stay the weekend. We will probably have a guide bring those who want to take the one hour hike to the top of Rabun Bald, Georgia's 2nd highest peak (about 4800 feet), which is visible from our Sky Valley home.
I have attached images showing the path of the eclipse from a broader geographic perspective, plus a closer look at the path through Sky Valley, and a map from 1918 showing the path of the last total solar eclipse (it missed Georgia).
We will order a quantity of the special sunglasses for safely viewing the eclipse, so please RSVP to jeb.howell@gmail.com by August 14, 2017 if you think you will come so we have enough glasses!
Don't get the BOOT! Be sure your car has a Kiwanis Club of Atlanta car decal properly displayed on your vehicle.
The security company contracted by Lanier Parking will be booting all cars that are parked in the reserved parking places and that do not have a valid decal on their car identifying them as attending the Kiwanis Club of Atlanta luncheon. So if you arrive prior to 11:45 am on Tuesday, please make sure you have a parking decal on your car. You can get a decal from Karen at the luncheon meeting, and then place it on the right back window (passenger side) from inside your car. They are static cling, so easy to put on and take off!
Do you want to let the members of our club know more about you and your business? Do you want to network and cultivate more business contacts? If you answered yes, then you need to sign up to do a "Member Spotlight" at one of our club meetings!
Spotlights are done every 2nd and 4th Tuesday luncheon meeting (and the occasional 5th) each month. You have two minutes to showcase your business and tell the other members how you can benefit them! To get on the schedule, just email Karen at KiwanisClubAtlanta@gmail.com.
Just in case you missed the last couple Member Spotlights at the Kiwanis Club of Atlanta luncheon meeting, we have listed the last few below. The next time you need someone with their expertise, please, "Do Business with a Kiwanian!"
"Do Business" with these Kiwanians!
